Journeys have destinations both lofty and mundane, but one thing that all journeys share is that they begin with where we are. From the point of view of our Journey into Oneness, it is important for us to take stock of what may seem quite a radical notion: we are not yet human beings.
We are not content to be anything. If we are overweight, we want to become skinny. If we are ugly, we want to become beautiful. If we are spiritual, we want to become Buddha or Christ. We are not yet human beings because we are always running away from what we are.
It is not that we should have no goals or aspirations—it is not that we should hold such fantasies that the end goal is some sort of inert, desireless state. Desires move us, and there is nothing wrong with movement. Desires are not to be abolished. It is simply important to note that journeys begin with where we are, and we are not yet human beings.
As we Journey into Oneness, we experience the Flowering of the Heart. When the heart flowers, the human being is born. This is the potential that lies dormant within each one of us. The Oneness Blessing is that spark that initiates the process that takes us from a species in transition to a state of being.
It is not that we will become an inert people with no desire to move anywhere. It is that we can look at where we are and where we would like to be without craving and attachment. Craving is the source of suffering; it is what prevents us from being where we are. The human being isn’t a creature devoid of desires, but one who has transcended craving.
When we experience the Flowering of the Heart, craving falls away. It is not that we do not travel, is that we move with equanimity. The frenzy to get somewhere flowers into the awe of the sights along the way; the very act of traveling is a joy in and of itself.
The Oneness Blessing is not associated with any religion or particular spiritual path. If you are Christian, be Christian and receive the Oneness Blessing as well. If you are Muslim, be Muslim. Jewish, be Jewish. Spiritual, be spiritual. Atheist, be atheist. There is no conflict. This movement isn’t about changing beliefs. The world has plenty of religions and spiritual paths and is not wanting for another. Journeys begin with where we are and the Oneness Blessing meets the receiver wherever she may be. It is not that we should all be the same, have the same ideas, and never disagree with each other. This is not what the work of Oneness is about. It is not that we become something different from what we are—quite the opposite—the Oneness Blessing helps us to become exactly who we are: the flowering of the human being.
